CINEMA is the solo project of former TIBET guitarist Jürgen „Pöngse“ Krutzsch. TIBET was one of those Krautrock bands, who travelled with bands such as ELOY, FRANZ K, GROBSCHNITT or EPITAPH in the 70s. CINEMA celebrated their greatest achievements mid to late 70s on big festivals in England with GINGER BAKER, TRAFFIC, HAWKWIND and others.

In 1979 the first and only LP TIBET was published by Bellaphon. 1994 it was re-released as CD by the French label MUSEA and 2015 reissued on LP by Sireena -Records.After TIBET had broken off in 1980, Pöngse began to turn towards electronic music in the style of Tangerine Dream. This is how CINEMA originated.

Isolation – LP (re-issue)

The debut album of CINEMA.
Pöngse recorded the LP ISOLATION with fellow musicians from other bands in 1985. The unfavorable conditions at the beginning of the recording sessions might have been what lead to the amateurish charm of this production. Pöngse began in a storage room, fiddeling around with miscellaneous equipment, and went to the studio only at a relatively late stage in the process. There he completed the recordings with various musicians. Only after the LP was produced, Pöngse realized, that there was no single appearance of a guitar on the entire production. He seemed to have had so much fun, experimenting on a variety of synthesizers, that he simply forgot about the guitar.

Loopings

The title of the album points to the fact that CINEMA worked primarily with loops here and upgraded them with keyboards and electric guitar. Together with Brigitte Grafe who was responsible for technique and mix, Pöngse has created a mixture of styles, ranging from spherical sounds, reminiscent of Tangerine Dream over danceable beats to orchestral film music. After he also played for THE MAGIC BOX, guitarist Benjamin Peiser is in on LOOPINGS too. In addition former TIBET keyboarder Dieter Kumpakischkis could be won for the project. The mastering was once again taken over by ex-Grobschnitt drummer Eroc.

The magiX box – CD

No less than 27 years after the debut album the sequel THE MAGIX BOX was released with the assistance of Pöngses girlfriend Brigitte Grafe. She is responsible for technique and mix. In addidion guest musician Benjamin Peiser joined the line-up on guitar. Meanwhile, the technology had become so advanced that CINEMA could also use monk choirs and orchestral sounds. The mastering of EROC provided the critically acclaimed soundscape.

The debut single of CINEMA was created in 1984 with the help of musicians from the group TIBET (Pöngses band before CINEMA). The flip side originated from the repertoire of TIBET.

FROM TIBET INTO THE CINEMA

Together
with friendly
musicians Pöngse recorded
a single and the LP ISOLATION
in 1984/1985 under the name CINEMA.
During the following years, he spent most of the time
running his music pub “Alt Werdohl”. While first mostly regional groups
went on stage, growing popularity lured more and more internationally known
artists.  Up to today well-established musicians can be met – and heard – in the
pub on a regular basis. All the time Pöngse carried around the idea to
revive TIBET since there was too much unreleased material
to let it go to waste. The project proved to be
quite difficult (the other musicians
meanwhile had moved to places
all over Germany) so almost
automatically it became
a restart of his
previous
project
CINEMA.

CINEMA IN YOUR BRAIN

CINEMA – that’s music in style of Vangelis, Mike Oldfield or Tangerine Dream: just film music. And if there are no suitable movies yet, they begin to form shape in your head while listening. Those films can be as different as the songs of Cinema – they range from electronic music via monk choirs and orchestral music to oriental rhythms or to dance club songs like Total Transition. Since 2008 Pöngse is supported by his girlfriend Brigitte Grafe, who is responsible for the entire sound engineering.
Furthermore, a variety of guest musicians are involved. Pöngse is restless: He won’t be running out of ideas in the near future. „I admire people who get bored,“ he says. To date, at least two or three more CINEMA-albums are planned. „Brigitte sometimes needs a lot of patience,“ Pöngse admits, „to translate my sometimes quirky ideas into sound.“
